Clarification on flat whites–maybe

You’ll need to read yesterday’s post for this one to make much sense. It’s about coffee-speak in Australia.

I admitted my ignorance about why a flat white (coffee with milk) is called flat. Miss Katie (US) offers an answer and asks another question. Jenny (Australia, I presume) answers her.

So that’s what I think I learned. For the sake of responsible journalism, anyone want to confirm?

You, my faithful readers, are an education for me.

More travel miscellany:

We experienced in both Sydney and Brisbane airports something I thought was long-gone in flight history. Non-flying Australian friends accompanied us to the gate for our domestic flight from Sydney and other friends greeted us at the gate when we arrived in Brisbane.

As an Aussie, I’m happy to confirm…

Flat white: similar to latte. Milk still frothed, but not as much as a cappuccino. It’s an Australian term. And it’s flat because the top is flat, not domed, like a cappuccino. Both have the same espresso shot, just that there’s more frothing of the milk in a cappuccino.

And as to your thinking about the long black in the former post: In Australia, we very rarely drink brewed or filtered coffee in cafes, diners etc like in the US. When you get a coffee in a cafe, it’s usually espresso-based. So a ‘long black’ is the same as an Americano – a shot of coffee, topped up with hot water.

You know it is a slow summer day here in the states when I take the time to google this answer, but I see you have an aussie friend who has already answered your question. Maybe I will have a cup of flat white some day, although I drink my coffee black! I would love to visit AUS and NZ! Thanks for taking us along on your trip.

  3. Nicole from Australia says:

Yep, as Bec said :-) . And you will also find that a lot of Aussies have their own expresso machines, that’s how much we love our coffee! I love making coffee, i find it therapuetic, the hum of the machine, the smell of fresh coffee.
Sounds like you are enjoying your time here in Aus, i get a smile on my face reading all your posts on things you are discovering and learning. Looking forward to Sydney myself! Have a great day and don’t forget to practice your “g’day mate”. That’s always amusing for us to hear :-D

  4. Jenny (Brisbane) says:

Looks like you’re getting the coffee’s sorted out – so enjoy them. Mind you, if you like light (skim) milk in your coffee you need to ask for a “skinny flat white” or “skinny cappucino”)!

Would loved to have been able to have a chat after yesterday’s meetings, but unfortunately, you were in a hurry! Thanks to you and John for coming and his sharing with us – we really appreciate it. Would have loved to gone to Sydney for Oxygen 11 and heard you speak too, but not this time!
Enjoy your time in this lovely country, and thanks for sharing your life with us.

Got something to say? Go for it!
