Esther Expedition: Streams in the Desert

Esther Expedition

Streams in the Desert: 366 Daily Devotional Readings4/23/1933 — Esther Nelson letter from Chengdu

I am enjoying Streams in the Desert so very much.

Sunday we worshipped with believers in Chengdu. Afterward, the name of the bookshop across the street caught my eye–Streams in the Desert–named after a book that was given Esther Nelson by friends at Bethlehem Baptist in Minneapolis when she was returning to China in 1932 to work in Chengdu.

Inside, almost immediately, Joann discovered the Chinese version of The Legacy of Sovereign Joy. She turned to the shopkeeper and pointed toward me, “This is the wife of the man who wrote this book.”

“Praise the Lord,” she replied.

Another woman overheard and walked over, picked up a copy and leafed through it. She handed a second copy to her friend. After both had completed their purchases, we caught up with them outside to get a picture and give them the address of the DG Chinese website.

(Earlier in Chengdu, we saw the book also at the Daily Renewal Bookshop.)

Quiz: What’s the 8th largest language in the world?

If you knew or guessed Russian, you’re right.

So it’s good news that Desiring God has launched zhazhdushieboga.org, the DG Russian website.

You can read more about it (in English).

Question for you: Why is this good news for you?

DG in China

With my eyes on China, this blog post from Desiring God caught my eye this morning. Now to watch out for the announcement of the first DG book published in China!

Desiring God Portuguese website

While we were at the FIEL Conference outside Sao Paulo, one of the highlight moments was when Desiring God announced the inauguration of the Desiring God Portuguese website. Around me, I could hear the gasps and murmurs of glad surprise.

Brazil is the largest of 9 nations where Portuguese is an official language.

If you are a Portuguese speaker, please take at least a few moments to check out Desiring God’s Portuguese website. There are a growing number of people who are working hard to increase the resources available there. You can bless them by leaving an encouraging comment at this post.

If you  don’t understand the language, you can bless them by commenting here how you’re spreading the news of it to anyone you know who does speak Portuguese and to Christian workers who are in one of the Portuguese-language nations.

Thank you!

Workers in Australia

Engage  has been sponsored by the Katoomba Christian Convention for 5-6 years. The intended audience is workers, as the Australians call them. I think we Americans would call them career-aged, or something like that–people after university and before family-life responsibilities.

The response is so great that Engage 2011 ran 2 separate weekends to accommodate more than 2000 people each weekend.

At the Desiring God blog, Johnny’s written a summary of what he had to say about glorifying God at work. Word is that it’s being tweeted and FB’ed all around Australia.
