For a select few–or maybe not so few

Our time in Bucharest is coming to an end. Soon we fly to Geneva for the next part of this Europe trip, and that means this blog will be focused on Switzerland for the next few days.

I’m so thankful for all of you Romanians who’ve told me you’re reading my blog. As I told you, I count on you to straighten me out where I get something wrong. And I need you to stay with me.

I’m not finished with all I want to remember and write about Romania. So please keep reading, whether you’re from Romania or elsewhere. If you subscribe to the blog, it will be easy for you to know when something new is posted, and I’ll have the pleasure of knowing you’re traveling with me.

So the next mystery gift will be to encourage new subscribers. (As always, mystery means I don’t know yet what the gift is, but you’ll like it.)

If you haven’t yet subscribed, here’s what you need to do to be eligible:

  • Use one of the links in the sidebar to the right to subscribe. You can choose whether you want to receive each new post by email or to receive a notification in your feed reader.
  • After you subscribe, comment at this post to tell me so.
If you are already a subscriber, you are eligible for the drawing if someone subscribes because you recommend the blog to them. After that person subscribes, you comment here to confirm that you were the one that sent them.

That’s all there is to it. Deadline is the end of the day wherever you are on May 18. After that, one of you will be chosen randomly to receive the Mystery Prize.

I’ve loved being in Romania with you, whether I’ve met up with you here or you’re visiting via the blog. You’ve taught me a lot. And oh yes, I’ve had fun too.

3rd stop: Hamburg (giveaway)

The final official stop in our Europe itinerary will be Hamburg. I say official, because there is one other day trip we’re planning from Hamburg that I’ll tell you about later. (Hint: I bought The Christian Travelers Guide to Germany through one of the used book sellers at Amazon.)

I’ve never been to Hamburg, although about a hundred years ago, we lived in Germany for 3 years. But that was in Munich, far to the south of Hamburg. I’m Hamburg: A Cultural History (Cultural Histories)looking forward to finding out a bit of how much difference or sameness there is between the two cities.

Sometime between now and Hamburg, I’ll be dipping into Hamburg, A Cultural History.

You know, don’t you, that these trip giveaways are my shameless way of milking you of whatever great advice and experience you can pass on that will make my visit richer? And you know what I’ll give away is a mystery gift because I myself don’t know what it is until I get it at my destination? So here goes with the Hamburg mystery giveaway.

To be eligible, comment at this post with any or all of the following:

  • Are you German?
  • Have you ever lived in or visited Hamburg or elsewhere in Germany?
  • What do you think of when you think of Hamburg or of Germany?
  • What would you want to do if you were visiting Hamburg?
  • Is there particular German food one should not miss?
  • What would you recommend as a gift to bring back?
Deadline is 11:59 pm cst, May 18.

2nd stop: Geneva (giveaway)

Apparently my earlier post about traveling to Europe confused at least one person. When we showed up at church tonight for a business meeting, she greeted us, “What are you doing here?!” Nope we’re not in Europe yet, but soon.

The second city in our itinerary will be Geneva. You can check out the Desiring God website to see what Johnny will be doing there.

We went to Geneva once–for about 2 hours in 1972, during a layover between trains, traveling from Munich to Albertville, France. We dashed from the train station to catch a glimpse of the Reformation Wall.

Travel with John Calvin: Geneva's Minister Whose Thinking Changed the World

One of the people most associated with both the Reformation and Geneva is John Calvin. So I’ve stashed in my carry-on a copy of  Travel with John Calvin: Geneva’s Minister Whose Thinking Changed the World. The publisher, Day One, has an impressive catalog of Travel with . . . guide books.

Also, let’s celebrate my long-delayed return to Geneva with another of my mystery gifts, this time from Europe–maybe Geneva.

To be eligible, comment at this post with any or all of the following:

  • Are you Swiss?
  • Have you ever lived in or visited Geneva or elsewhere in Switzerland?
  • What do you think of when you think of Geneva or of Switzerland?
  • What would you want to do if you were visiting Geneva?
  • Is there particular Swiss food one should not miss?
  • What would you recommend as a gift to bring back?

Deadline is 11:59 pm cst, May 18.

Winner(s)

Congratulations to Bethany Bowen, the winner of the Chinese Christmas scene.

But hold on! There will be another couple of winners from amongst you when Joann returns to Minneapolis in a few days. She reminded me that she has a couple of gifts for you.

I’ll let you know soon.

all gone ** Ask and you shall receive ** all gone

Update — 7:30 pm cst: The books are all gone now. I’m sure there’ll be more another time.

__________

I’m going to follow the example of my friend, Dorothy, and give away books so someone else can enjoy them. Here are a bunch of travel-related books. They’ve served me well, but I’m not expecting to go to any of these places soon. When I do go again, I’ll look for a current book.

Some of these are in excellent condition–good enough to serve as a Christmas present for a traveler you love.

So, here’s the way this works. I list the books. Whoever comments first that he or she wants a particular book gets that book–no strings, no hoops to jump through. Just comment, telling me which book you want, and then use the Contact link to send me your mailing address.

Merry Christmas!

A giveaway for your Bible study group

When I imagine who you are, dear readers, I see people who are interested in the world beyond their own home and neighborhood and city. I see people who care about people wherever they are in the world. And I guess that many of you have a heart that is pulled toward the plight of orphans here and far away.

If that’s true, I hope you’ll visit NoelPiper.com and enter the giveaway I’ve offered there for you and your Bible study group.

A Christmas Gift

I’m thankful for all of you who follow me around the world. Since my next distant adventure is to China, Lord willing, I have a Chinese Christmas gift for one of you.

This one-piece creche was hand-carved by a Chinese Christian artist. The dimensions are approximately 5 inches high x 6 1/2 inches wide. The base is 1 inch deep. The main figure is about 1/2 inch thick.

I have a similar one–one of my reminders that Jesus was born to be the Saviour of brothers and sisters from every tribe and tongue.

To be eligible for the drawing:

  • Subscribe to Tell Me When to Pack. Use the links to the right or click here.
  • Comment to this post to tell me you’ve subscribed. (If you’re already subscribed, comment to tell me that.)

Following in her footsteps–and a giveaway

Joann & Noel brainstorming & planning (aided by bare feet & Diet Coke)

I mentioned earlier that part of my research into the life of Esther Nelson is a trip to China in the Spring.

I love traveling, but I’m not intrepid enough to undertake this venture on my own. So I’m planning to follow in the footsteps of Joann Pittman, with her as my guide following in the footsteps of Esther Nelson.

I’ve know Joann for a lot of years, since before she moved to China 28 years ago. She’s lived in various places there and worked in a variety of capacities: English teacher, language program director, educational program director and cross-cultural trainer. And she’s become a friend.

Survival Chinese LessonsHer motto these days is “Living well where you don’t belong.” Her goal is to help people prepare for and navigate the challenges of cross-cultural living through her speaking, training, and writing.

A prime example of her efforts along these lines is Survival Chinese Lessons, a helpful and manageable resource for business travelers, adoptive families, tourists, short-term teams, families seeking their roots . . . .

I have 2 copies to give away. Here’s what to do:

  • Subscribe to Tell Me When to Pack, so you can do a little following in the footsteps yourself. Links are in the side bar on the right.
  • Comment just once to this post to report that you’ve subscribed (or that you already were anyway).
  • Optional: In your comment, tell us what’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of China.

Deadline is 11:59 pm, Wednesday, November 16.
